From Pits Lower Than Dungeons

IDOK DEVOTION FOR TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2009

Our natural feelings however strong, however factual they appear to be, however right in the natural we are in having them does not change God.  He is not put off by our fears and feelings and doubts; He does not change His mind about us even when our minds are thinking things about Him and/or our situation that do not line up with Scripture.  A reading of Luke 7, the account of John the Baptist in a pit lower than a dungeon because he spoke the truth, I believe reveals that John was thinking things about Jesus that did not line up with what John himself had preached.  Jesus did not condemn John, Jesus did not change His mind about John.  Jesus spoke kindly about John; Jesus sent a message to John to reinforce what John in his heart knew to be true.  When our minds are betraying us with thoughts about our God and or our situations that we know from sermons we have heard and passages of Scripture we have read, let us confess it to Him.  Tell Him.  Let us tell Him just how we feel; tell Him how unfair and afraid we feel, then ask Him to help us believe Him and trust Him and love Him.  Let us ask Him to show us how to trust Him.  Let us ask Him to lift us from our pits lower than a dungeon and when He shows us step by step what to do, let us do it!
Here is a portion of Psalm 40.  A reading of the whole Psalm would be even better, here’s a link.
1 I waited patiently for the LORD;
         And He inclined to me,
         And heard my cry.
 2 He also brought me up out of a horrible pit,
         Out of the miry clay,
         And set my feet upon a rock,
         And established my steps.
 3 He has put a new song in my mouth—
         Praise to our God;
         Many will see it and fear,
         And will trust in the LORD.
 4 Blessed is that man who makes the LORD his trust,
         And does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
17 But I am poor and needy;
         Yet the LORD thinks upon me.
         You are my help and my deliverer;
         Do not delay, O my God.
Praise Reports and Prayer Requests
A prayer request from Bobbie: I have a friend who’s 4 year old son (Logan) is in the Hospital fighting for his life. The day after Thanksgiving a truck bed fell on his head. Please include him in your prayers.
ABBA, You know Logan’s condition in this moment; Friday to Tuesday morning is a long time in such need.  We pray, Lord, for Logan to be restored, to recover and live to praise You and give You Glory; for him to live and give testimony to Your Goodness.  We pray for his family to be undergirded by Your Eternal Arms and for humans to step up to hold and love and encourage them too.  Thank You for the privilege of praying for Logan and his family.  Thank You for the privilege of praying for every other person whose name is written here.  Thank You for Your holy and wonderful watch-care over them and Your ministry of love and healing to each of them in every situation.  And, ABBA, particular for those unspecific unspokens that are so close to heart that we can not speak them, we pray for those; there are many out there and we ask You to display and demonstrate Your Manifested Presence in each of their situations. Thank You for our IDOK Troops.  Please keep them safe today in spirit, soul and body; please bring each one of them home safe and sound at the appointed time and we particularly ask that they come home more in love with You than when they deployed.  And, ABBA, those on our list who have already come home, we pray they will be careful to honor you at home with holy living.  Thank You for this season we are entering.  Thank You Lord Jesus for coming to save us and I pray that we as IDOKs and Readers will honor You and exalt You more this Christmas Season than we have at any other in our lives.  We pray to lift You up above all that the world says is celebrating.  We pray for wisdom and discernment to be kind and merciful especially to those who by their conduct deserve it the least.  Thank You Lord Jesus for forgiving us and for Your boundless love to us.  Amen and amen.
