The 2 Samuel 6 Nugget

IDOK DEVOTION FOR FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2008
Twenty-Three of twenty five – a Great Recipe:
23- Each night before you go to bed complete the following statements.
I am thankful for_________. Today I accomplished
__________.

Are you ready for the 2nd Samuel Chapter 6 nugget that is just right for us in 2008? In the beginning of Chapter 6 not only is David disobedient but as king he is leading his people in disobedience and, of course, they are following. David is bringing the Ark of the Covenant home but not according to God’s previous and still standing instructions and great tragedy is the result. But David repents, God forgives and in verse 14 David has abandoned himself in worship of the LORD.
14 Then David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod.
15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet.
Let me share with you what Beth (Moore) wrote: We see David almost oblivious to everyone around him, totally liberated in the spirit, dancing through the streets of Jerusalem “with all his might” (v.14)! Oh, I love this scene! Centuries later, a group of disciples were stunned when Mary of Bethany poured the fragrance of abandoned worship on Christ’s feet (John 12:1-8). Completely abandoned worship is often misunderstood. We don’t see David practice outward worship often. Usually his worship took the form of songs, words, prayers, but this was a very special moment! One worth celebrating with complete abandon!
Let me tell you my dear friends I want this liberated, abandoned worship. At least once in my life I want to experience what David experienced here in chapter 6 and I hope you do too.
But there is more for us to see before we close for today. Beth said: Completely abandoned worship is often misunderstood. And so it was for David.
16 Now as the ark of the LORD came into the City of David, Michal, Saul’s daughter, looked through a window and saw King David leaping and whirling before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart.
Please recall that Michal is David’s wife, even the FIRST one he married and as she sees his abandoned worship she despises him. I think despise would translate to hate. She HATED David. Her heart, the seat of her emotions, was filled with hate for David. I tend to believe that hate included David’s God too.
Now lets pick up at verse 20 and see what happens when David gets home. The first sentence of verse 20 tells us he is going home in a GREAT mood. He is ready to lavish his household with blessings. Talk about a slap in the face – read what happened next.
20 Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, “How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!”
21 So David said to Michal, “It was before the LORD, who chose me instead of your father and all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel. Therefore I will play music before the LORD. 22 And I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them I will be held in honor.”
23 Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.
Can you play that scene on the screen of your mind? Let me give you more of what Beth wrote: David went home to “bless his household,” but he was met with ridicule and condemnation. He did not allow Michal to quench his spirit. He responded to her with the words, “It was before the Lord.” Can you almost hear him say, “How dare you! My worship was not for you, it was for the Lord!” Her scolding must have stung his heart. You can sense his reaction from the text, yet he resolved, “I will celebrate before the Lord.” He seemed to be saying, “Whether or not my family does, whether or not my friends do, whether or not this nation does, I will celebrate!”
And that’s the nugget in 2nd Samuel 6 (there are others too). Can we like David say whether my spouse or my children worship Jesus, whether my friends worship Jesus, whether folks approve or disapprove; whatever other Americans do or do not do, even if November 4 brings on a desecration of the White House; still I will celebrate JESUS?!!
Abba, I pray as our IDOKs read this they too will sense what good news this is; that we can celebrate You, we can worship You and this Nation in which we live cannot hinder us. We can choose to refuse to be hindered in giving You the worship You deserve. No people, no nation, no family member, no friend, no politician, no judge, no one can stop us from worshipping You – no one but we ourselves – please help us to abandoned ourselves in worship of You and You alone. Thank You for this Scripture. Thank You Holy Spirit for witnessing it to our spirits. This is good news and we receive it as good news. And now we look to our list and we remember them to You. How awesome it is that because of Jesus we can come before You and intercede for the help each of these need. Thank You for hearing our prayers and for answering. Thank You for the protection and grace You have given over and over to our IDOK Troops; thank You that Justin is safely home and we pray for the rest to come home safely too. Thank You for our IDOKs; thank You for this ministry; help me be faithful; help them be faithful in their respective places; revive Your Church; save and forgive America; bless Israel for Jesus sake. What?

IDOK DEVOTION FOR THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2008
Twenty-Two of twenty five – a Great Recipe:
22- Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

Philippians 4: 19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

It often means five days of workbook study wedged into two days but I am loving my Beth Moore study – A Heart Like His. I meet with 20 or so other women on Wednesday nights and our Pastor’s wife is the facilitator. One of the day’s homework I did today is prompting this IDOK. Or maybe two days — now I can’t decided which nugget to give you!
First, let me show you a pattern.
1 Samuel 23: 2 Therefore David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?”
And the LORD said to David, “Go and attack the Philistines, and save Keilah.”
I Samuel 30: 8 So David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?”
And He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.”
2 Samuel 2: 1 It happened after this that David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up to any of the cities of Judah?” And the LORD said to him, “Go up.” David said, “Where shall I go up?” And He said, “To Hebron.”
2 Samuel 5: 19 So David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” And the LORD said to David, “Go up, for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into your hand.”
2 Samuel 21: 1 Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David inquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, … .
See the pattern? David inquired of the LORD and the LORD answered and David obeyed. I love this! Look particularly at verse 19. David inquired of the LORD – Shall I go? And the LORD said Go. So he did. And God did just what He said He would do. Great relationship, wouldn’t you say? Look further at this great relationship.
2 Samuel 5: 10 So David went on and became great, and the LORD God of hosts was with him.
12 So David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel, and that He had exalted His kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.
The LORD God of hosts is with David. David KNOWS that the LORD has established him as King and that this establishment is for the sake of the people. I think I can safely say that nearly everyone in Christian Faith knows David is a man after God’s own heart. That we have established. But let me show you something that may both disturb you and encourage you.
Think again about those verses above where David inquires of the LORD and the LORD answers. And look again at verse 12 (2 Sam.5) and be sure to remember verse 19 (2 Sam. 5). David KNEW the Lord had established him and as we have already seen David repeatedly inquired of the LORD for answers and direction. Now read verse 13:
13 And David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he had come from Hebron. Also more sons and daughters were born to David.
Nothing recorded here that David inquired of the LORD about this, is there?
And look what Deuteronomy 17:17 says: Neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away; nor shall he greatly multiply silver and gold for himself.
Now don’t forget verse 13 (2 Sam.5) is sandwiched between verse 12 and verse 19 (2 Sam.5). Read them again if you need to. What does this tell you about David? What does it tell you about you? What does it tell you about every other sister and brother of Christian faith? Are you dismayed? Are you encouraged? How will you allow this to affect you? DADDY GOD, bless our ponderings and Holy Spirit, don’t let us fail to meditate on this for Jesus sake.
Guess I’ll have to wait on 2 Samuel chapter 6 – there’s a GREAT nugget in there too that we can use now in 2008!
We have an update on Captain Tran: – the young man at Ft. Knox who had a stroke. Captain Tran is doing good/better. They had him in a rehab program in Louisville, KY but have since sent him back to L.A. To be near his family which has been a great thing. Jonathan says that they are very supportive. They’re Vietnamese and family is very important to them. His age (thirties) and his good health is also on his side. He still can use his left side but may gain some of that back – with lots of work and prayers. I told Jonathan to tell him that lots of people have been praying for him.
Update and continued request: David T. Went to be with the LORD this week-end. Continue to pray for his wife. He didn’t have life insurance so she will be struggling.
Father God, thank You for Captain Tran’s improving medical condition and now we continue praying for his recovery and for his family. Lord, we know so little about him, but this we know: You love him and You desire fellowship with him and we pray that be so. And now we pray for David T’s wife as she walks this road of grief, praying for her to find her comfort in You and praying that You will provide for her not only spiritually but financially too. As so often when we meet here, we come with our IDOK Troops praying for their safety and well being in mind, body and spirit and today I am additionally asking You to make sure their votes for president be properly received and counted and Lord it is my prayer that we here Stateside and our Military abroad will be enough to secure the presidency for McCain and Palin. Lord, whatever You have to do get Your People committed to voting Your Word, do it. Don’t let there be any area of our day to day living that we do not inquire of You. Don’t let us just come to You on certain issues; cause us to pray and seek Your Will for everything. Help us ponder today’s passages and help us will to hear You and will to obey You. Thank You for Your Presence; You delight us Father. We are grateful to be Yours in Jesus Name. Amen and amen.

Wardrobe Matters

IDOK DEVOTION FOR WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2008

Twenty-One of Twenty Five – A Great Recipe:
21- Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends Will. Stay in touch !!!

My beloved and I were recently viewing a movie and while watching I made this IDOK note: It does matter how you are clothed.
In the movie a young woman was dressed in a manner that you and I by proper definition would called immodest. We might even go so far as to say she was advertising. And if you spend a little time at the mall or similar shopping places you may see young ladies dressed in a manner that most likely would bring testosterone alive in certain onlookers. And it is at that point we have two choices, we can either whisper (or louder) to our shopping partner how despicable is that young lady or we can pray, realizing her clothing choices may be a dramatization of a heart that is desperate for attention, a heart that does not yet know her worth in Christ Jesus.
But back to our woman in the movie: as love, kindness and respect were demonstrated to her she changed her attire and when she did, it made a difference. As she walked up (or down, however you view it) the street of the small town, women no longer covered the eyes of their children and pulled them to the far side of the street and men no longer slyly lusted. Same woman, different clothes. Now families said ‘hello, glad to see you, enjoy your day’.
Two observations here. ‘Men’ judge other ‘men’ by their outward appearance; by the clothes we wear, by the countenance of our face; by our frames, too tall, too short, too skinny, too fat – the list goes on. ABBA does not do that. Admittedly, He has an advantage we do not have. He instantly and always knows the heart. Maybe we would do well to hold our disdain or our applause until He reveals to us the heart of that one we are ‘critiquing’.
I Samuel 16:
6 When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, “Surely this is the Lord’s anointed!”
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Psalm 44:
21 Would not God search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.

And then we have the balancing Text.
Matthew 7: 20 Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.
By their actions, we shall know them. And yes the clothes we choose to wear is an action and the same repeated choice may indeed reveal the heart.
What does it say about us if we continue day after day to leave off the ‘clothing’ our Father has instructed us to wear?
Ephesians 6: 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Could it be if we leave off dressing ourselves in the Armor of God, we will instead put on the garment of ‘looking on the outward appearance’?
Another something to ponder for a while I think, Father. Help us wait upon You to reveal the heart of people rather than forming opinions and making assumptions about them. And, Holy Spirit, help us put on that amour ABBA has given us to wear; help us depend upon You to put on each piece, each day. As I look over this list of names, it would be overwhelming if we failed to trust You. People we love are ill, they hurt, they struggle and others seem to keep making wrong decisions and we want them to change; we get weary watching; don’t let us give up; help us keep trusting, keep believing and expecting You to do what seems impossible. Comfort Heather and Brandon, fill in those gaps with Yourself. And I pray You will supply all that Shay needs to return to Zambia and I pray for the children – save them Lord, encourage them and grow them up to be godly. Grow up our children and grandchildren to love You and hate sin. Holy Spirit please be gracious to us, bless us with the mercy of conviction and grant us grace and space to repent, individually and as a Nation. We are only days from the election; in the time remaining please expose to voters dirty hands and lift up clean hands to victory we pray. We pray for our IDOK Troops, for their safety, mentally, bodily, and spiritually. We pray for peace and encouragement for families and friends. And, ABBA, for each IDOK I pray for Your Wisdom to be granted and I pray for wills to obey You for Jesus sake. Amen and amen. Fresh Pair Morning

IDOK DEVOTION FOR MONDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2008
Nineteenth of Twenty Five – A Great Recipe:
19- God heals everything-but you have to ask Him.

Oh, what a difference a new pair of lens makes!! Four months ago I gave up my hard contact lens for soft ones; the kind you wear for a month and then discard the old ones for a fresh pair. And this morning is fresh pair morning. I LOVE fresh pair mornings!! Everything looks better through a fresh pair of lens.
And this morning we have all awakened with a ‘fresh pair’ – but we do have to accept them and put them on. Father’s mercies to us this morning are brand new and the canvas on which we paint today is a new one. Choose today’s new canvas; put away yesterday’s and begin NEW today. Paint well today on your new canvas with your ‘fresh pair’!!
Lamentations 3: 22 Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not.
23 They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.
24 “ The LORD is my portion,” says my soul,
“ Therefore I hope in Him!”
Colossians 4:
4 that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.
5 Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.
6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
Yes, ABBA, I pray my brothers and sisters will pray for me that I may know what I ought to speak at any given time today and I pray that for them too; that we all will redeem the time today for Jesus sake. Thank You for the new canvas on which we are to paint today and thank You that a fresh look is available to us today; help us receive it with joy and wear it well today. Many things are on our minds. We have family and friends with deep and varied troubles and we pray for them, for recovery and restoration. We pray for our IDOK Troops, for their protection of mind, body and spirit. We pray for proficiency in the jobs they do today; we pray they will depend upon You to govern and guide each step they take. And Father as odd as it may seem I pray for laughter for them today; that laughter may do them good as a medicine. May it be Lord that every IDOK will have at least a moment of laughter – even in grief and sickness, make it be that they receive from You a moment of laughter. Enlighten us today Lord; forgive America, give us grace and space to repent. We continue to pray for the election so close at hand now. Whatever happens Lord we KNOW You are in control and You know my prayer and the prayer of many others, please don’t give us what has been earned, give us mercy. I pray too for Israel, that America will continue to be their ally. I am so looking forward to the day they come to the Peace You have for them. Bless Your Name, Lord! Blessed be Your Name. We give ourselves, this day, this list of precious souls to YOU and we know You will not fail us. Amen and amen.
