Goats

IDOK DEVOTION FOR FRIDAY, MAY 30, 2008

Matthew 25:
33 And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.
34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
41 Then He will say to those at His left hand, Begone from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels!
Ever wonder why Jesus said goats on the left? Often we hear sermons comparing Christians to Sheep because it is such an effective comparison. I found the following information at a Blog entitled Church Growth; its URL address is http://churchgrowth1.blogspot.com/2007/10/good-shepherd-and-his-sheep.HTML Unlike goats, casual observation reveals that sheep seem to need each other. The flock, their “community,” is their identity. Not only do sheep need each other, they also need a shepherd they can depend on. … The shepherd is the main-stay in the sheep’s lives. Without his attention and care they would quickly find themselves in trouble.
Accurate description of us, wouldn’t you say? But my question was ever wonder why Jesus said goats on the left. Clearly from Scripture, the ‘goats’ are lost and will not inherit the Kingdom of God. The above referenced Writer, identified only as KC, also wrote: Goats don’t need a shepherd to watch out for them; they are independent to the point of being “head-strong”.
That explains it! The nature of a goat is independent, head strong, ‘do it my way’. And Lost Souls are those who have failed and/or refused to admit their independence, head strong, ‘do it my way’ is sin. And remaining in that unrepentant state keeps them on the left. The ‘goats’ of this world need a NEW NATURE, the nature of a sheep and they can have that new nature ONLY by submitting to THE GOOD SHEPHERD – JESUS THE CHRIST. Failure to do so keeps them on the ‘left’ of God. I’d say that’s the worst of all places to be, wouldn’t you?
But wait I’m not a ‘goat’ and you’re not a ‘goat’, right? We are sheep. We know we are sheep. We are the sheep of His Pasture and He is our Shepherd. Of that we are sure (I hope you all are sure – if you are not; you need to get that way!)
So in Christ Jesus we are new creations, not goats any longer but now sheep.
2 Corinthians 5: 17 Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!
HOWEVER, I have noticed we sheep are prone to revert to the ways of a goat. So what’s that about? Paul described it this way in Romans 7:
15 For I do not understand my own actions [I am baffled, bewildered]. I do not practice or accomplish what I wish, but I do the very thing that I loathe [which my moral instinct condemns].
19 For I fail to practice the good deeds I desire to do, but the evil deeds that I do not desire to do are what I am [ever] doing.
24 O unhappy and pitiable and wretched man that I am! Who will release and deliver me from [the shackles of] this body of death?
25 O thank God! [He will!] through Jesus Christ (the Anointed One) our Lord! So then indeed I, of myself with the mind and heart, serve the Law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.
So the next time that wonderful spouse or son or daughter starts ‘butting heads’ with you, one or both of you is acting like a GOAT. Submitting our minds and hearts to our Shepherd will keep us sheep acting like the sheep we are rather than the goats we used to be.
Hmmm … The terms ‘goat’, ‘goat-head’, etc. Just took on deeper meaning. No wonder Ethel frequently called Fred an ‘old goat’.
Abba, thank You for changing me from a goat to a sheep; however, I am still immature enough that I often act like a goat – head strong and tree butting – thank You for Your moment by moment forgiveness. And thank You too that day by day You are leading and teaching us better; teaching us to be better sheep, mature sheep who nourish the lambs and comfort and warm others. You are so AWESOME and we are delighted and grateful for what You are doing with us. Thank You. We gratefully invite You to keep it up.
We come now with these listed here, praying for their needs of today to be met in You; praying for their comfort, strength, growth, maturity, healing and restoring with knowledge and wisdom and determined choice and will to receive more and more of Your Love so we can more and more love others. And we pray for our IDOK Troops for their safety and protection, for their health and wellbeing in mind and body and spirit. We pray for them all to come home more in love with You than when they deployed. And Lord we have not tired of praying for Israel for Her Peace and for America to continue to support Her and for America to repent. Abba, have mercy of the goats of America; get their attention, point out to them who they are and where is their destiny unless they repent. Forgive us for the unholy laws and practices going on here now. Your Love and Justice rained fire on Sodom and Gomorrah; I know You are grieved with the sins of the world and we have earned Your wrath and I know it is coming. Thank You for Redemption, thank You that no soul receives Your wrath unless they choose it. Holy Spirit please pour out conviction and convince people to choose Your Life, Your Salvation instead of death and hell. Thank You for every soul who has been born again and I pray for all of us all over this world, asking for grace to grow; asking for a growth spurt in us. Abba, help us humble ourselves so You don’t have to. Thank You for Your Favor and Blessing that we are receiving today in Jesus Name. Amen and amen.

Can-Nosed

IDOK DEVOTION FOR THURSDAY, MAY 29, 2008

Still got the Presidential Election on your mind? Read this: http://www.bpnews.net/bpnews.asp?ID=28131
I am reading again. This time 3:16 by Max Lucado. Thus far in my reading today, Max writes about fear. He said this: Note: the presence of fear in the Hebrews didn’t bother God; their response to it did.
And as I read further Max explained that facing our fears without God will harden our hearts. The Hebrews erected a golden calf. (What were they afraid of? That Moses was gone and not coming back, among other things.) Max suggested that our therapies for our fears are much more sophisticated than golden calves; we have: belly-stretching food binges or budget-busting shopping sprees. The result is the same We still face fears without facing God.
Not smart, huh? I have determined that in the midst of our fears, we must guard our hearts; we must not allow our hearts to harden. We must not deny that we are afraid (when we are) or be carried away with it. Instead we must choose to cling steadily to Him and strangely (or not so strangely), this will release us from the grip of fear. I must tell you this is not with me an original concept.
Philippians 4: 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Proverbs 4: 23 Above all else, guard your heart, For it is the wellspring of life.
Ephesians 4: 17-19 NLT describes hard-hearted folks this way:
… For they are hopelessly confused. Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against Him. They have no sense of shame. They live for lustful pleasure and eagerly practice every kind of impurity.
Sound like any body you know? A whole world of people, right? Max said a hard heart wrecks more than the life of the one having it – family members too. And he gave an illustration that I just have to share with you.
‘My executive assistant, Karen Hill, saw the result of such stubbornness in a pasture. A cow stuck her nose into a paint can and couldn’t shake it off. Can-nosed cows can’t breathe well and they can’t drink or eat at all. Both cow and her calf were in danger. A serious bovine bind.
Karen’s family set out to help. But when the cow saw the rescuers coming, she set out for the pasture. They pursued, but the cow escaped. They chased that cow for three days! Each time the posse drew near, the cow ran. Finally, using pickup trucks and ropes, they cornered and de-canned the cow.
Seen any can-nosed people lately? Malnourished souls? De-hydrated hearts? People who can’t take a deep-breath? All because they stuck their noses where they shouldn’t, and when God came to help, they ran away.’
This world is FULL of can-nosed folks but GOD still LOVES them all and gave Himself for them (and us)! Isn’t He AWESOME?
So what can you and I do to guard our hearts? According to Max we only need to do two things to keep this from happening to us.
One, Don’t forget what God has done for you. Short memories harden the heart. Make careful note of God’s blessings. Declare them daily! Meditate upon them daily!
Two, confess sin quickly. Sin-hoarding stiffens us. Confession soften us. … Is your heart hard? Take it to your Father. You’re only a prayer away from tenderness. You live in a hard world, but you don’t have to live with a hard heart.
Good stuff, huh?
One more thought before we pray. The cow with the can on her nose could barely breath and she could certainly take in no nourishment or water. A poor soul with a hardened heart is barely breathing and is without strength or desire to feed upon The Word of God or drink in the Water of Life. We all know some souls like this, don’t we? Lets make sure we never become one of them!
Lord God this is good reading. Thank You for Max. Thank You for the insights You have given him to share with us. Thank You that we are able to read and comprehend. Thank You that You give us comprehension. Thank You that You give us sight and understanding. Thank You that You give us strength and ability to praise You and feel our fears melting away. Thank You for Your Power to soften hearts. And Abba, I pray for a softer heart for me and I have folks on my mind that I want so much to see You soften their hearts. Please let me see You soften those hearts and renew those minds. And Holy Spirit please put me on a short, short leash; even a key chain as Beth says, don’t let me harden. Nourish our souls, Lord; help us breathe deeply into You.
I don’t know what You want to do with these words but I know You have promised that Your WORD will not return void so I am counting on You Holy Spirit to help somebody out there today and this somebody here too.
Please protect our IDOK Troops in mind, body and spirit today. Please bring Israel to the Peace You long to give Her. Please strive with America to continue to support Israel and to return to You. And move us Your sons and daughters to be faithful instruments for You to move through to help this Country repent. We confess we are concerned about the economy, the greed, the fraud and the sense of extortion that we sometimes feel when we go to purchase gas and other items. Help us keep our focus on You and Your Provision. Help us be positive in this negative world. Help us count Your Blessings today. And for these listed here thank You that You are there and here for them; thank You that they have a future and a hope in You. And yes we ask that You heal the sick, restore the afflicted and save the lost. No One else can do these things, ONLY YOU. Amen and amen.

While It Is Day!

IDOK DEVOTION FOR WEDNESDAY, MAY 28, 2008

Whatever good you hope to do in this world do it now or at least begin now.

John 9: 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.
4 I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.
5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
Jesus said neither his parents’ sin nor his own sin caused his illness but God would work in it and reveal Himself. Jesus continued on to say that He, Himself, must work while it was day because the night was coming. And we believe Jesus was not speaking of 6:00 PM that evening as the night. We all have our ‘night’ coming and even as Jesus we need to do the Works of Father while we have DAY to do it.
And this is not to encourage you or me to get busy; not at all. The last thing we need is to be more ‘busy’. Do you recall any where in Scripture that says Jesus ran or Jesus hurried? Busy is just not a word we can associate with Jesus. But we can associate the word ‘occupied’. He was occupied with doing the Works of Father while He had DAY to do it. That is all He is asking of us to ‘Occupy’. To be occupied with Him. He gave a Parable. You know the one about the ‘pounds’ given to the servants.
Luke 19: 13 And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.
Pounds (or talents, gifts, abilities, opportunities – you get the picture) have been given to each of us by Our Lord – whatever we are going to do with them, we need to do it now while we have DAY. No, not in a frenzy; not harried and hurried but STEADY and TIMELY, just like Jesus – BE YE OCCUPIED.
Oc·cu·py
Tr.v. Oc·cu·pied, Oc·cu·py·ing, oc·cu·pies
1. To fill up (time or space):
a lecture that occupied three hours.
2. To dwell or reside in.
3. To hold or fill (an office or position).
4. To seize possession of and maintain control over by or as if by conquest.
5. To engage or employ the attention or concentration of:
occupied the children with coloring books.
Take your pick. I like 2. Residing (abiding) in Christ Jesus will keep me occupied and on track. Don’t you think?
John 15: 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
Lord, we want to be occupied; we want to be ‘gainfully employed’ in Your Vineyard. Help us recognize the gifts, the talents, the opportunities You have given us and help us Holy Spirit to be willing to use them rather than bury them in busy-ness with temporal matters that will not advance eternity. Even more help us turn temporal tasks into eternal accomplishments. I know You in us can do that. And by Your Grace I am watching to see You do this in me today.
And today we are praying for these listed here. Each and every one of them, You know them by name and by need and we entrust them to You and we proclaim that You do all things well and we know You are occupied still with Eternal Matters for Father’s Glory and our good. To You Lord be Praise Forever.
We entrust our IDOK Troops to You today for their safe keeping and for the peace of their families and friends. As best we know how we entrust America to You for You to correct and convince as You see fit. We trust that whatever comes You are in control and those who are ‘occupied’ in You, You will provide all we need. We pray for the Peace of Israel. We pray for Vacation Bible Schools that are to begin soon, anoint Your people to deliver Your Word to children, tender their hearts to receive it. Reap a mighty harvest, Lord. And Abba, love on our IDOKs today, convince each of them today that You are in love with them. Amen and amen.
