We Are Learners – Aren’t We?

IDOK DEVOTION FOR FRIDAY, MAY 16, 2008

Just a little sidebar this Friday morning before we get started. Yesterday while ironing (it’s a REAL good excuse to watch TV) I caught a couple episodes of 7th Heaven. The first one was all about Ruthie’s first date. For me, Ruthie was too young for her first date but in the last scene, well, maybe not. I’ll set the scene for you: Ruthie arrived home from the date, said good night to Mom and Dad, went to her room, turned on some good music, stretched out on her bed (fully dressed), looked up and said, “Thank You.” I smiled real big to see such a depiction on television – a young girl coming home from a date and saying thank You to God our Father. I LIKE IT!!
And some day I’d like to see that played out in my grand-daughters (when they are much older than Ruthie). I figure it this way, if a young lady can come home from a date, look up and say Thank You to DADDY GOD, she must have behaved herself in a godly way!!! Amen and Amen!!
John 6: 65 And He said, “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.”
66 From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more.
67 Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”
68 But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
69 Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Could it be any plainer? No one can be saved unless he/she is enabled to be saved by the Holy Spirit. No man, woman, boy or girl will ever be saved unless they are first convinced by the Holy Spirit that they are sinners, undone and deserving of everlasting fire; and moreover, that Jesus is the only Savior. Further the Word says that the Father desires for no one to perish, for no one to spend eternal death in everlasting fire. Father, wants everyone to be saved which can only mean that everyone, every man, every woman, every boy and every girl at some point are told in their span of time on this earth that they are in need of a Savior. I do not know how that plays out in some places but Romans 1 does tell us that even nature, creation, the planet we live on and the heavens that we see above us is enough to let every man, woman, boy and girl know that God is. And if they will, not can but will, accept that He is then He will make sure they get the “rest of the story” along with the opportunity to repent and believe in the Bread of Life.
Let us now look at Peter’s great confession. The confession that all who are birthed into the Kingdom of God have made. Lord …you have the words of eternal life…You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. To paraphrase Peter, he was saying – we have learned to believe and trust You; You are the Holy One of God, You are the Anointed One, You ARE Eternal Life. To whom else would we, could we, go?
And we say: Who indeed!!
One more point and we are done for today: we have “learned to believe” What a mission! To learn to believe God. All this weekend, all next week, your mission, my mission, is to learn to believe God; to learn to trust Him, to learn to rely upon Him, to learn to believe Him. How will you do that? How will I do that? Yes, by prayer and reading the Scriptures, but more than praying and reading; by choosing to obey, choosing to believe. When adversity comes to me this week, even today, I must choose to believe that God is still in control and that He loves me and that He would never do or allow anything to be done to me that will ultimately harm me. So, our mission is to learn to believe God. And the very fact He uses the word LEARN indicates it’s a process. We will not always do it right. We will miss the mark. There will be times that we will fail to believe Him but each time we fail, we can begin again. And that my dear ones is LEARNING TO BELIEVE.
Father, we are here to learn; to learn to Believe You; not about You, but You. And Holy Spirit, we are counting on You to make it happen. And even today we expect progress. Thank You Father.

Fragments

IDOK DEVOTION FOR THURSDAY, MAY 15, 2008

John 6:
12 So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost.”
From the preceding text we see how gracious and generous and giving is the Lord Jesus as he feeds the 5000 plus people who were hungry, who He really had no obligation to fed but He did. Here in verse 12, I want you to notice Jesus allowed nothing to be wasted. He told the disciples to gather up the fragments. Not that this is the primary meaning of the verse but as you read it, wouldn’t it be good to be reminded that God NEVER wastes ANYTHING; that He is able to nurture even with fragments. Like seasons in our lives when we feel as if we have been spread out, picked over, chewed up and left for garbage – yes! Those pieces of us, He will gather up. And in His Hands even those pieces become nurturing not only to us but others. ONLY Jesus can do that. NO OTHER in all the world can take our sins, regrets, mistakes, bad choices, stubbed toes and ‘whole foot in our mouth’ and redeem them to nurture us and others. There’s only ONE condition – we have to be willing. Got fragments? Bring them to Jesus. HE IS AWESOME.
Romans 8: 28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
13 Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten.
Give them all to Jesus
Words and Music by Phil Johnson and Bob Benson, Sr.

Are you tired of chasing pretty rainbows
Are you tired of spinning round and round
Wrap up all the shattered dreams of your life
And at the feet of JESUS lay them down.
***
Give them all, Give them all, Give them all to JESUS
Shattered dreams, wounded hearts,
And a broken joy
Give them all, Give them all, Give them all to JESUS
And He will turn your sorrow into Joy.

He never said you’ll only see sunshine
He never said there’ll be no rain
He only promised us a heart full of singing
Bout the very things that once brought pain

At this link hear the music – some of you are gifted to sing along!!

Dearest Kathie – Asking for something for myself has always been difficult for me. I was just recently diagnosed with systemic lupus and have been started on medication to hopefully put it in remission. I have known for along time that something was wrong with me and was lead to a good hematologist. This IDOK devotion puts things in some perspective for me. I can and will beat this disease with the promise of His word that perfect love drives out fear. I am fatigued beyond comprehension and making it through a physical day is hard, my heart is heavy sometimes with worry over Jacob and yet I know that I know that I know that God will strengthen me if I but call on Him. Therefore, I am calling on you, my prayer warriors (not worriers) to ask God to take this disease from my body if that is His will, and if He has other plans for me, that they will be revealed and I will use this disease to further His work and Kingdom. I humbly ask you all to pray for courage, peace and relief in mind and body for both me and little Jacob. I ask give thanks for a loving supportive husband that God sent to me to console me and soothe me. I pray too for his peace and that I will not ask too much of him in my own selfishness and fear. I am blessed — as it has been said many times – too blessed to be stressed — but so hardheaded sometimes I fail embrace THE promise. Rachel
And Praise: Dear Kathie,Lyndon arrived home on Sat. Hawk will be returning home this evening!!!Many, many thanks for your concern, support, & PRAYERS.Beverly

Father, thank You for this passage of Your Word, thank You for the words and music You gave to Johnson and Benson; thank You that You do take the pieces and fragments of our lives and turn our sorrows to joy. Only You Lord can do that, no other in all the universe can – Only You. Thank You that we know You and that we know even in part the Power You are. And to You All Wise, All Knowing and All Powerful we come this morning with our request for Rachel and we are asking You to heal her in the here and now. Comfort Jacob, Mark and Rachel in these days. Thank You for the safe return of Lydon and Hawk and we continue to pray now for our other IDOK Troops and this morning we add Sgt. Bozicevich. Thank You for the privilege of praying for them; please protect them in mind, body and spirit today and at the appointed time, we pray You will bring them all home safe and sound and more in love with You than when they deployed. We ask for a successful conclusion to these wars; we pray for the Peace of Israel; and the repentance of America; and Lord, thy will be done in the presidential election. We also pray this morning for each of these listed here – we know You know each need and we know You are willing to take care of each one of them for Your Glory and their good and it is for that we ask in Jesus Name. And Father, I ask that You guide each IDOK today into wisdom, strength, discernment, and obedience for Jesus sake. Darlene. Rachel. Allison. Kinard Family. Alla Mae. W C and family.
