IDOK DEVOTION FOR FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2008
All I lacked was putting on my socks and shoes and I would be ready to ride with my beloved to the intersection of Pine and Orchard – that would give me at least a half mile walk, if I didn’t retrace some of the streets before getting back to the house. When I walked into the den, I noticed he was on his knees loosing the laces of my tennis shoes. He invited me to sit, lifted my foot to rest on his knee and began to slip on my socks and shoes for me. His loving gesture generated a warm fuzzy that I will not soon forget as well as thoughts of Scripture.
I pictured Jesus kneeling to wash Peter’s feet and Peter saying no. John 13: 8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. Peter was quiet capable of physically washing his own feet and I was quiet capable of physically putting on my own socks and shoes. However, Jerry’s act of benevolence had nothing to do with my ability and if I had responded as Peter I would have missed something so wonderful. As I lingered over this warm fuzzy, I acknowledged to myself that Jerry is the only one from whom I would accept such a gift. To me it was an intimate act that only he is qualified to perform. And what makes him qualified? My absolute certainty that he loves me. And I thought, is that why we have difficulty receiving acts of kindness from one another? Is it because we are not sure we are loved? Is that why Peter said no? Did Peter not know Jesus loved him? And why didn’t he? It certainly wasn’t because Jesus had not demonstrated His love to Peter, to all of them; to us too. Do we shy away from intimacy with Jesus because we are not sure He loves us? Why don’t we know? Can you imagine yourself as the woman with the Alabaster Box kneeling before Jesus giving your love to Him? Beautiful picture, isn’t it? Now, can you picture Jesus loosening the laces of your shoes, lifting your foot, placing it on His knee, pulling your socks over your toes, giving your ankle a little pat and then slipping your feet into your shoes and tying up the laces? If your answer is no, may I urge you to ask Him to reveal to why not? John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
ABBA, reveal to each of us the level of intimacy we have with You and the level You desire us to have with You. We commend these ill and needy to You. Amen and amen. Odom Family. Donnie N. Melinda H.
