Names!

whole-wheat-pancakes-9735211f39d04cc783639c1bcc53c1a9-3233885327Good morning!

Nehemiah 11

I confess all these names in Nehemiah are not in my vocabulary. Pronouncing them — nope can’t do it. But let me tell you, I appreciate them.
Why?
All those names tell me GOD knows the people attached to the names. Each and every one of them, He knows their name! But that’s not all — He knows your name. He knows my name.

There’s more! Twice in this one chapter, He says this: “468 men of valor” and “123 mighty men of valor”.
Can you imagine GOD calling you a mighty man or woman of valor?
How good is that?!

May this Wednesday be a splendid day for you!

We Could

As I read Nehemiah, chapters 8 and 9, 9:2 in part says this: ‘and they stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers’, and I wondered if many of us do the same. We seem so busy we miss enough respites of quiet to even see our sins much less to seek deliverance from those strongholds handed down in us from generations before us. We could study our spiritual heritage and see the good and the not good; we could give thanks for the holy and denounce and forsake the unholy. The art of quiet, real quiet saturated in peace and jeweled with smiles; based on Scripture, we could have it if we seek it and choose it.

Doors or Doormats

My goal is not to be long but to be good.

Philippians 2.
2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being united in spirit and purpose.

And how and when are we not united in spirit and purpose?
The next verses help me understand.

3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

When we live selfishly instead of living to do our Father’s will, we walk in empty pride, instead of humility which keeps us from unity in spirit and purpose.

Does this mean I spend my thinking and doing, striving to please my brothers and sisters in the faith, always concerned about what this or that looks like to them?
Does this mean I become a doormat to what others want?
No.
It means we are to be DOORs who open the way for others to see JESUS.
Yes, even our brothers and sisters (all of us) need a closer, better look at JESUS; unity in spirit and purpose will help us.

Is this easy? I don’t think so.  And I think it takes practice listening to HOLY SPIRIT to learn the difference between a doormat and a Door.
That’s it.

As Well?

I have a brief word of encouragement for us this morning before I ready myself for the work day.

6Hezekiah appointed military commanders over the people and gathered the people in the square of the city gate. Then he encouraged them, saying, 7“Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged before the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater One with us than with him. 8 With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.”

So the people were strengthened by the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.  source

Hezekiah did not deny the opposing army was VAST. He did not deny they were in danger of attack. He did not deny the opposition. He did not deny the problem. BUT he did say this: for there is a greater One with us than with him. 8 With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.”

That is what I am bringing to us this morning!
I am not denying we have a vast enemy to face today.
I am not denying there is pain and unrest in this day.
I am not denying there is aggravation looming. I am not denying there are huge obstacles to overcome today but I am bringing to you and holding on tightly to myself this: for there is a greater One with us than with him. 8 With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.”

The people of Judah were strengthened by these words.

May we be as well?
