Our Own Way

IDOK DEVOTION FOR WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 6, 2008

Today I was reading a devotional contained in OUR DAILY BREAD written by Philip Yancey. In part he said: “…I found that the Bible includes detailed accounts of people sorely disappointed with God. Job and Moses had it out with God, as did Habakkuk, Jeremiah, and many of the unnamed psalmists.” Even if I did not know from the witness of the Holy Spirit and personal experience, I think the very fact that God allowed these ‘disappointments’ to be told on the pages of The Bible would cause me to think seriously that The Bible IS authored by God. Who else but God would give out such facts? Would not human authors ‘cover up’ such happenings for fear such knowledge would tarnish their image? But not our ABBA, He is fully TRUTH, fully TRUSTWORTHY and fully BELIEVABLE, if we will agree to believe. I am so glad I agreed to believe. And I am even more glad that He enabled me to believe!
Lets read Psalm 88 and see some disappointment.
1 O LORD, God of my salvation, This is a great start, acknowledging He is LORD and He is his salvation. But now he begins to describe his misery.
I have cried out day and night before You.
2 Let my prayer come before You;
Incline Your ear to my cry.
3 For my soul is full of troubles,
And my life draws near to the grave.
4 I am counted with those who go down to the pit;
I am like a man who has no strength,
5 Adrift among the dead,
Like the slain who lie in the grave,
This poor soul cannot sleep; he is so weary he feels as though death is upon him and there is nothing he can do about it. He is overwhelmed, defeated and it seems to him that things just are not going to get any better. And if this were not bad enough look what he does next.
Whom You remember no more, He begins to accuse God of just not caring about him.
And who are cut off from Your hand. Surely God does not care or He would do something; if God cared he would not be in this situation.
6 You have laid me in the lowest pit, And it gets worse. Now he is accusing God of more than just not caring, He said God is the one who caused it.
In darkness, in the depths.
7 Your wrath lies heavy upon me,
But he does not stop there. He moves to confessing that God is angry with him.
And You have afflicted me with all Your waves. Selah
8 You have put away my acquaintances far from me;
And as he descends deeper into his despair, he accuses God of taking people (things) away from him.
You have made me an abomination to them; Here he is saying folks hate me God and it’s Your fault.
I am shut up, and I cannot get out; The poor soul felt so helpless. Here was big ole mean God and he was too small, too despised for God to care at all.
9 My eye wastes away because of affliction. He sees no way out for himself.
LORD, I have called daily upon You; Even though he has prayed day after day – nothing good is happening. I have stretched out my hands to You.
10 Will You work wonders for the dead?
Now he begins to try to reason with God; to point out to God that treating him this way is not good for God’s image.
Shall the dead arise and praise You? Selah Then he reminds God that God needs him; He needs him to testify for God and that he cannot do that unless he is alive – dead people don’t praise. On and on he goes blaming God for his miseries. On and on he continues to believe that God is mad at him. After all, why else would this be happening to him?
11 Shall Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave?
Or Your faithfulness in the place of destruction?
12 Shall Your wonders be known in the dark?
And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
13 But to You I have cried out, O LORD,
Still he refers to HIM as LORD. The Psalmist is NOT an unbeliever; he is a hurting soul who even in his despair somewhere within knows that God is God enough to allow him to bleed all over HIM.
And in the morning my prayer comes before You.
14 LORD, why do You cast off my soul?
Why do You hide Your face from me?
15 I have been afflicted and ready to die from my youth;
I suffer Your terrors;
I am distraught.
16 Your fierce wrath has gone over me;
Your terrors have cut me off.
17 They came around me all day long like water;
They engulfed me altogether.
18 Loved one and friend You have put far from me, And my acquaintances into darkness.
He ends still accusing God of putting him away.
You know what I treasure in this Psalm? I see ABBA is SO GOD that He loves us even when we are drowning in doubts and ill-guided self-pity or pitching temper tantrums and trying every thing we can to get Him to give us what He knows would destroy us – our own way.
Romans 8: 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Nor any other creature – not even ourselves. But I dare not end this without a word of caution. Remember the Prodigal Son? Coming back from the pig pen is long, hard and grueling. It is best to avoid the pen pig at all costs.
I Corinthians 3: 13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. 14 If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
Abba, this is a lot to digest and I look forward to reading it again for myself to gather more of what You are saying in this to us. Thank You for speaking to us again. We are AWESOME and we love You. Thank You that Your are so gracious to forgive us; to love us through doubts, self-pity, fear, temper tantrums and everything else we do trying to get You to do things our way. Thank You that You are SO GOD that we cannot twist Your Arm. Thank You Lord. Thank You. I pray for each IDOK and each Reader, teach us and empower us to trust You especially when we are disappointed. I am convinced the Psalmist did and we want to too. We are trusting You to love on these and give them everything they need at just the right time. We are trusting You to continue to take care of our IDOK Troops and bring them home at the appointed time. And I again ask You to have mercy on America, to give space and grace to repent. And Lord I have tip toed around this in these public prayers, forgive me. Abba, please don’t allow Obama to be president. I pray we as Your children will arise and see America preserved. Protect Israel and bring Her to the Peace You desire for Her. Thank You for loving us and thank You that no matter what happens You are God and we trust You. Amen and amen. IDOK DEVOTION FOR TUESDAY, AUGUST 5, 2008
Luke 7: 6 Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat.
I wish I could impart to you what reading this verse means to me. The Pharisee asked Jesus to come and eat with him. And Jesus did. Jesus went to the house of the Pharisee and look at these five words: AND SAT DOWN TO EAT. Use your Holy Imagination and see the scene. Our Jesus sitting down to a meal in the house of a Pharisee. Oh to be able to sit down and face to face share a meal with HIM!! One day we will. And even now the Holy Spirit enables us to dine with Jesus.
37 And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil,
You know what? We are all sinners. So when this verse was penned by our brother Luke, I don’t see it as Father pointing out to us this woman is a sinner but rather it is His way of letting us know that this dear soul’s sins were public knowledge. She was KNOWN as a sinner; her business had been talked about all over town. Can you use your Holy Imagination and comprehend how much courage it took for this woman to come to the house of a PHARISEE? She was desperate for Jesus. If we were so desperate for Jesus, wonder what our lives would be like?
38 and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.
Can you see this scene? Can you see this woman not just kneeling but bowing low to kiss the feet of Jesus? How many feet have you washed; other than your babies and/or grand-babies? It’s not something you have had opportunity to do often, is it? And if you have, wasn’t that someone extremely special to you? Yet this woman did more than just wash the feet of Jesus. She kissed them. Without sharing intimate details, I tell you it is only LOVE and DEVOTION that brings one to kiss the feet of another. This woman LOVED Jesus! Wonder what our lives would be like if we loved Him so much? And if we do not love Him this deeply, why don’t we?
39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, “This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.”
To whom was the Pharisee talking? Can you see him muttering to himself? And what does Jesus do? He addresses him.
40 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”
He called him by name and said I have something to say to you. Could Jesus be addressing you (or me) today regarding something we have been muttering about? The Pharisee was not talking to Jesus; he was indirectly accusing Him. But I can say one thing for the Pharisee, he did say and I am paraphrasing: ‘okay, what is it’?
So he said, “Teacher, say it.”
Jesus called the Pharisee, Simon and Simon called Jesus, Teacher. Obviously, Jesus knew the Pharisee, as He knows each of us; but obviously the Pharisee did not know Jesus. He invited Jesus to supper but He did not KNOW Him. Had he ‘known’ Jesus he would have called Him LORD rather than Teacher. And that I think Dear Ones is the plight of many. Jesus to them is just a teacher who lived 2000 plus years ago; not Lord of LORDS and King of KINGS.
And Jesus began a parable.
41 “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
42 And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?”
43 Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.”
And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.”
44 Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head.

Can you see that scene? Jesus turns to the woman and He invites the Pharisee to look at her also. As Jesus focuses on the woman, He compares her acts of kindness with the Pharisee’s failures to act. That must have ticked Simon (the Pharisee) off big time.
45 You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in.
46 You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil.

47 Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”
Using your holy imagination, can you see Jesus having stood to His feet; having raised the woman to her feet, there holding her hands, he looks over at the Pharisee and says: “her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”? Do you think He was saying to the Pharisee, ‘you love Me so little because you have acknowledged little (or no) sin to Me? And then He looks back to her again with more love and compassion than she had ever experienced. He looks into her soul and says; “Your sins are forgiven. Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.” Notice Jesus did not for a second smooth over or sugar-coat her sins. He just forgave her and moved passed her sins to her love. How different would we be if we did the same? With ourselves and with others?
Her faith in Him saved her. Saved her from eternal damnation in hell and as she abided in the peace she had just received she would be saved from continuing to live in those sins. And the Pharisee? Well, what do you think? What was he saved from? At this encounter, obviously nothing. There’s a world of folks today like Simon. They encounter Jesus and walk away, saved from nothing. Is there anything more tragic than that? But what about us? We, who have been saved, continue to encounter Jesus on the Pages of Scripture and in every encounter we should be saved from back-sliding and elevated to a higher degree of being In Love with Him.
48 Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
49 And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
50 Then He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

Dear Ones, Abide and Go in Peace today.
Abba, as we encounter You on the Pages of Your Word, we want to embrace You and Your Will, whatever it is. We want to Know You more. We again pray for these listed here. You know what each one needs, You know just what to do for them and we are privileged to ask You to do it. We pray too for our IDOK Troops, thank You for their safety and well-being. Thank You for the progress that is being made. And Abba You know I have been viewing media coverage of presidential candidates, You know the feelings that boil to the surface. I need Your help. I don’t want to sin against You either in anger or fear. You know my thoughts. Thank You that You are in Control. Abba, forgive and have mercy. I don’t know how but somehow before the November election open blinded eyes. Lord, please spare America; protect Israel and revive Your People for Jesus sake.

THE BETH MOORE SIMULCAST was this past weekend – 70,000 women in 716 locations and 23 denominations! I am so glad I was one of them. I am still digesting THE WORD we received. Beth ministered from a familiar passage – Luke 8 – the Parable of the Sower. As the Holy Spirit leads I will share more with you. For this morning a Word from Psalm 105:
1 Oh, give thanks to the LORD!
Call upon His name;
Make known His deeds among the peoples!
2 Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him;
Talk of all His wondrous works!
3 Glory in His holy name;
Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the LORD!
4 Seek the LORD and His strength;
Seek His face evermore!
5 Remember His marvelous works which He has done,
His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth,
6 O seed of Abraham His servant,
You children of Jacob, His chosen ones!
Give Thanks. Make His deeds known. Sing Psalms to Him. Talk of all His wondrous works. Glory in His Holy name. Seek His strength. Seek Him. Remember what He has done. This sounds like what a great day is made of. GO FOR IT!!
