Commitments and Determinations don’t always get the job done.
Did you ever notice that?
I have.
Because I said I was going to turn off my digital screens every evening at 8 o’clock and wind down with a paper and ink book in my hand and here I am at 10:00 sitting before this digital screen.
We are asked to make commitments on a regular basis. Even preachers ask us to make commitments.
Maybe my memory is faulty but I don’t recall Holy Spirit ever asking me to make a commitment to Him.
I’m serious.
On the day of my salvation, I did not make a commitment to JESUS.
I didn’t commit my life to Him. I didn’t have a life to comitt. I was dead in trespasses and sin.
I accepted His offer. And He did the rest.
Every good change that has occurred in me since that Tuesday night in 1975 has been ALL HIM.
It’s All His doing.
My role is agreement. Step by step, moment by moment agreement that He is right.
Some days I am more successful than others at agreeing with Him. Cause you see when I agree with Him I obey Him.
The Christian life is not about making commitments or determinations or any other such thing that the flesh can muster up to do.
The Christian life is successfully lived when we AGREE with Holy Spirit, moment by moment.
Now do to-do lists and decisions and guidelines and plans help?
Of course, they do!
But unless they are Holy Spirit prompted and energized, we more often than not fail. At least I do.
Don’t worry so much. Don’t fret. Don’t beat yourself up. Don’t run yourself ragged. Or run yourself down.
Just let Him teach you to enjoy His company.
Just let Him teach you about Himself and let Him train you to enjoy agreeing with Him.
And you means me here too!
John 15:5 “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” source
Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” source
I read it and agree.
