The Way Back

Luke 2.

Beginning at Verse 41. By this time Yeshua (Jesus) was already twelve and Passover Feasting for another year was complete. Mary and Joseph along with family and friends, a whole caravan of them, were now headed home to Nazareth. Toward the end of the day, as Joseph and Mary were making camp for the night, they realized Jesus was not with the group.

41 Now His parents went to Jerusalem every year for the Passover Feast.
42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem, according to the custom of the Feast;
43 and as they were returning [to Nazareth], after spending the required number of days [at the Feast], the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem. Now His parents did not know this,
44 but supposed Him to be in the caravan, and traveled a day’s journey; and [then] they began searching [anxiously] for Him among their relatives and acquaintances.
45 When they did not find Him, they went back to Jerusalem looking for Him [everywhere].
46 Three days later they found Him in the [court of the] temple, sitting among the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions.  source

Can you imagine?! GOD the Father had entrusted His Only Son to them and they had lost Him! Mary and Joseph lost GOD!

(Have you ever lost sight of GOD? Yeah, Me too!)

I imagine both Mary and Joseph tore that road up back to Jerusalem. Her momma heart must have been in pieces (she had a lot of that, didn’t she?) as she and Joseph searched for Him for three long agonizing days. And finally, it dawned on them to go to the Temple. And there He was . . . just where He was supposed to be. GOD is always where He is supposed to be.

So, next time we leave GOD behind, let us quickly head back and He will be there waiting. He will have some questions for us, some instructions and perfect love all wrapped up in forgiveness.

Peering into the Possibility

Most often when I sit to read the Scriptures I have no agenda but I am purposed to hear whatever I hear and often what I hear (not verbally, of course) is a question and often the answer is oh, could it be.

Like today.

Luke 1 (because I am behind already – should have read Luke 1 yesterday, but catching up is as good as an on-time start). So, Luke 1; visiting the account of John’s (Cousin to Yeshua) birth.
Do you know what verse 15 says?

15 for he will be great and distinguished in the sight of the Lord; and will never drink wine or liquor, and he will be filled with and empowered to act by the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb. source

Does that mean no person who is drunk with wine or liquor (at least at the time of the intoxication) is filled with the Holy Spirit?

Wait!

Ephesians 5:18  (AMP) 18 Do not get drunk with wine, for that is wickedness (corruption, stupidity), but be filled with the [Holy] Spirit and constantly guided by Him. source

Drunk, intoxicated, plastered . . . etc is the definitive description.

Intoxication. Look closely at the word. INTOXICATION. What word do you see right there in the middle? Yep. TOXIC.

How about this definition? 1. The impaired condition caused by use of alcohol or a drug or other chemical substance     source

And this one? 4. (Medicine) poisoning    source

Do we dare peer into the possibility that consuming any substance to the point of TOXIC inhibits us from being filled with the Holy Spirit (at least at that intoxication)?

Reality proves that repeated intoxication is indeed toxic to the body and I’d say obviously even once is toxic to the soul of man (or woman).

Like it or not, I think the answer to our second question is yes.

I just came to hear.

Foot Gear

Shoes. Who doesn’t want a well-fitting, comfortable, and fashionable pair of shoes?
And what do shoes do? Well, they protect our feet from earth’s elements; cold, wet, sharp and/or damaging objects.  We need shoes; we need a buffer between our feet and the terrain we touch down on.

Ephesians 6: 15 and having strapped on your feet the gospel of peace in preparation [to face the enemy with firm-footed stability and the readiness produced by the good news]. source

Spiritually we also need a buffer, protection, from the cold, hot, hostile, sharp and damaging elements of this sin-cursed planet.  And that protection is the Gospel of Peace. The Gospel of the Prince of Peace.

When functioning is healthy what do feet do?
Stand. Walk. Run.

And so

Spiritually, we stand righteous when we are in Christ.
Spiritually, we walk in peace and safety when we walk with JESUS.
Spiritually, we run, when we are in Christ, when we have shod our feet with His Gospel, we flee temptation.

We have a Belt of Truth, we have Righteous Body Armor to cover our inner being and we have well-fitting Foot Gear that enables us to maneuver hostile terrain in peace! Let’s get Dressed.

And we have PJs! :)

The Middle

I’m back . . .  :)

Ephesians 6

Next piece: Breastplate of Righteousness

Breastplate.
Not a common word for a few centuries now. The New Living Translation terms it Body Armor; perhaps a clarification of torso would help our mental imagining.  That area of our frame from the neck to the navel, I read that somewhere, I don’t recall the source at the moment.

. . . and having put on the breastplate of righteousness (an upright heart),  source

The first was the belt of Truth.

So, what is this torso covering? This Breastplate? This Body Armor? That covering for the area where our vital organs are housed? For sure many of the garments I’ve seen do not cover well — not even as well as my PJs. Some really important stuff gets left hanging out . . . not good. You know what I mean?

But the Righteousness of JESUS firmly applied, covers and protects and nourishes our vital inner being! He heals our hearts; our lungs fill with Fresh Air; our gut is strong and ready to digest and pull in nutrients. But without Him . . .

Jeremiah 17:9  (NLT)9 “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? source

The Belt of Truth
The Breastplate of Righteousness — Don’t even stay home in your PJs without them, much less leave the house!
