Practice makes perfect – we’ve all heard it. And to some degree we believe it. And to the degree we believe it, we will practice it.
Like so with Scripture.
Romans 6 was not fun to teach this morning. It says and therefore I had to say that we in CHRIST JESUS are dead to sin and alive unto God (that part we like but what follows is) therefore we can no longer live in the practice of sin. And I used a couple of examples and now I have to practice them.
I said some have said I can’t eat just one cookie, if I eat one I have to eat the whole box. I had to say that’s a lie. We don’t HAVE to eat the whole box. We eat more than we need (cookies or whatever the fancy or staple is) because we WANT to eat them, not because we HAVE to. See what I mean? Not fun! Not fun at all!!
BUT the good news is we don’t HAVE to eat the whole box because every man, woman, boy and girl who is IN CHRIST JESUS, has within us the Resurrection Power of God. And since He who is within was able to raise JESUS CHRIST from the dead, He in us can say no to a box of cookies. And here’s the sticky part — if we don’t call upon Him for His Strength to say NO to boxes of cookies or unwholesome movies or outbursts of anger that wound others, or compromising holy principles, or gossip, or unforgiveness, or coveting, or well you see what I mean. If we don’t call upon Him for His Strength to say NO, it’s not because we can’t, it’s because we don’t WANT to. NOW THAT STINGS!
Am I, did I advocate that we can be sinless in practice in this life? ABSOLUTELY NOT! But I did bring to point that even though we will not be sinless this side of Heaven, we can sin less today than we did yesterday, if we want to. And if we don’t want to? Well, we better check to make sure we have actually said YES to JESUS in saving faith.
It was a hard lesson. So what will I do with it now? Well, for now, I’m gonna put this ‘Box of Cookies’ to automatic post and I’m going to ignore all those good things that need to be done and go to bed – not because I want to but because obedience and love for JESUS commands that I rest the temple in which HE by HIS SPIRIT resides.
