A Smack to the Head

Approximate reading time: 2 minutes

JT and I were pleasantly enjoying some errand running this afternoon in our area of Sweet Home Alabama when I noticed a banner erected on the lawn of a church. I honestly don’t recall the name and even if did, I wouldn’t tell you.  :)

So the banner read: Contemporary Worship.

And like a friendly smack to the head my internal word police hit me with this:

That sign just shouted to me this is not about JESUS, this is about you. We are catering to You!

And it didn’t stop there. That smack to the head went on to say:

Worship is not about style, music, contemporary, traditional or any other such description. Worship is obedience. It’s about ascribing delight in and honor to, with elated gratitude that, GOD would even let us love and adore Him!

Now, what am I supposed to do with that I ask you?!

2 Kings 17:36 (TLV) 36 but only Adonai, who brought you up from the land of Egypt with great power and with an outstretched arm—Him will you fear, and to Him will you bow down and to Him will you sacrifice.  source

1 Chronicles 16:29  (TLV)29 Ascribe to Adonai the glory due to His Name. Bring an offering and come before Him. Worship Adonai in the splendor of holiness.  source

Matthew 14:33  (KJV) 33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. source

Luke 24:52 (KJV) 52 And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy source

Revelation 22:9 (CSB) But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you, your brothers the prophets, and those who keep the words of this book. Worship God!”  source

Rants

Approximate reading time: 2 minutes

Oh how we love David. The first king GOD chose for Israel.  He termed him:  A man after Mine Own Heart.

Even so this man we love and respect was so human; so like us Psalm 139.

Verses 19 – 22, David is pitching a rant.  I personally think in that moment he thought he was justified; even exhibiting appropriate behavior. But there were consequences. I think he recognized them. Following his rant he said:

Psalm 139:23 Search me, O God, and know my heart.
Examine me, and know my anxious thoughts,
24 and see if there be any offensive way within me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.  source

Here’s what I think. Lets try it on for size.

David had anxious thoughts. David was concerned there was offense in him. He was concerned he had offended GOD.

Is it possible that David’s ranting; his misplaced hate was causing his anxiety and his offenses?  We believe from the Whole Counsel of God that we ONLY get to hate sin; we do not have permission from God to hate people – even people who openly hate God.

Could it be our anxious thoughts stem from misplaced hate? Could it be that gnawing that we have offended God comes from hating someone(s) He has called us to love?

Just pitching that out for us to consider.

Reading, Hearing

Let us read and hear the Word of the LORD.

Psalm 116 World English Bible (WEB)

116 I love Yahweh, because he listens to my voice,
    and my cries for mercy.
Because he has turned his ear to me,
therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
The cords of death surrounded me,
the pains of Sheol got a hold of me.
    I found trouble and sorrow.
Then I called on Yahweh’s name:
“Yahweh, I beg you, deliver my soul.”
Yahweh is Gracious and righteous.
    Yes, our God is merciful.
Yahweh preserves the simple.
I was brought low, and he saved me.
Return to your rest, my soul,
for Yahweh has dealt bountifully with you.
For you have delivered my soul from death,
    my eyes from tears,
    and my feet from falling.
I will walk before Yahweh in the land of the living.
10 I believed, therefore I said,
    “I was greatly afflicted.”
11 I said in my haste,
    “All men are liars.”
12 What will I give to Yahweh for all his benefits toward me?
13     I will take the cup of salvation, and call on Yahweh’s name.
14 I will pay my vows to Yahweh,
yes, in the presence of all his people.
15 Precious in Yahweh’s sight is the death of his saints.
16 Yahweh, truly I am your servant.
I am your servant, the son of your servant.
You have freed me from my chains.
17 I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving,
and will call on Yahweh’s name.
18 I will pay my vows to Yahweh,
yes, in the presence of all his people,
19 in the courts of Yahweh’s house,
in the middle of you, Jerusalem.
Praise Yah!  source

God’s Names

Tony Evans in his book, The Power of God’s Names, asked this question: “What attributes of God are most meaningful to you? Why?”

How would you answer? I answer this way:

His Omniscience – There is nothing He does not know.
This speaks untold security to my whole being.

His Omnipotence – He cannot be overruled, overthrown, defeated, removed, on and on.
I am safe with Him and in Him.

His Omnipresence – Eternally present.
There is no place I can go that He is not there.  And

We are always loved by Him and He is always good.

Now it’s your turn. Enjoy!
